Artist’s Statement:

My goal as an artist is to embrace the reality of life every day through painting and sculpture. I don’t seek out personal, social or political issues, but I have learned to recognize when a reply or response is within. These issues surface in my work when I least expect it. Thus, the results of a day in the studio or outdoors painting are rarely planned but allowed to happen. When a message or statement emerges from within, I want the viewer to get it too. What I have to say at times is important, at least to me, and I don’t want it abstracted in some convoluted form. At other times I simply want the viewer to experience the sunshine on my shoulders, the texture of my strokes, and the palette that emerged that day. Life isn’t always complicated.

I have never endeavored to achieve commercial success by repeating the successes of yesterday. Repetition leaves you empty. While it may satisfy the Gallery owner or a niche market, the artist soon looses the spark that brings life to each work.

It is impossible to capture the multi-faceted approach to my work within a written statement. Creating is an intense, complex and passionate act that cannot be conveyed in words. If I could do so, I would be a writer.
